Veterinary Services in St. Albans, VT

Caring for pets in St. Albans and Franklin County, Vermont

Our goal is simple: to provide compassionate, high-quality veterinary care that supports the health, comfort, and well-being of every pet, while building lasting relationships with the families who love them.

Wellness Care

Regular wellness visits are an important part of keeping your pet healthy and helping them live a longer, happier life. Annual wellness examinations allow our veterinarians to establish a baseline for your pet’s health and identify potential problems early—often before you notice any signs of illness.

Our comprehensive nose-to-tail examination includes evaluation of the heart and lungs, eyes, ears, teeth and oral health, skin and coat, lymph nodes, abdomen, rectum, and musculoskeletal system.

Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, environment, and individual health needs, we will recommend appropriate vaccinations and preventive care. We also recommend maintaining year-round flea and tick and heartworm prevention to help protect your pet from common and potentially serious parasites.

Preventive care is one of the best ways we can work together to keep your pet feeling their best at every stage of life.

Dog Vaccinations & Preventive Screening

Core canine vaccines include Rabies and DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza), as well as Leptospirosis. Based on your dog’s lifestyle, environment, and potential exposure risks, we also highly recommend Lyme, Bordetella (Kennel Cough), and Canine Influenza vaccines.

To help protect your pet from potentially serious vector-borne diseases, we recommend annual screening for tick-borne diseases and heartworm disease. Our 4DX SNAP test is a simple blood test that screens for Lyme disease, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, and Heartworm disease.

Annual screening for tick-borne diseases is important because dogs can be infected without showing obvious signs of illness. Early detection allows us to identify infection before more serious complications develop and helps our veterinarians determine whether additional monitoring, treatment, or diagnostic testing is needed.

Annual heartworm testing is required to continue heartworm preventatives, and regular screening helps ensure that your pet remains protected while allowing us to detect infections early.

Our veterinary team will work with you to develop a vaccination and preventive care plan based on your dog’s individual needs, lifestyle, and exposure risks.

Feline Vaccinations & Preventive Screening

Our core feline vaccines include Rabies and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia). These vaccines help protect your cat from several common and potentially serious infectious diseases.

For cats that spend time outdoors or have potential exposure to other cats, we highly recommend the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) vaccine. FeLV is a contagious viral disease that can be transmitted through close contact with infected cats, including through grooming, shared food and water bowls, and other interactions. Vaccination is an important part of protecting cats with outdoor lifestyles or other potential exposure risks.

We also offer a 3-in-1 feline screening test that checks for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), and Heartworm disease. Regular screening is particularly important for cats with outdoor access or unknown exposure histories, as infected cats may not show obvious signs of illness early on.

Our veterinary team will work with you to develop a vaccination and preventive care plan based on your cat’s age, lifestyle, environment, and individual health needs.

Annual Bloodwork & Medication Monitoring

We also recommend annual bloodwork for pets receiving long-term or chronic medications, including pain medications, thyroid medications, and urinary incontinence medications. Routine bloodwork helps us monitor your pet’s overall health, evaluate organ function, and identify potential medication-related changes before they become serious.

Annual bloodwork may also be recommended as part of your pet’s preventive wellness care, particularly as pets age. Establishing routine bloodwork provides valuable baseline information and allows us to identify subtle changes in your pet’s health over time.

Our veterinary team will work with you to develop a vaccination, preventive care, and monitoring plan based on your pet’s individual needs, lifestyle, age, and exposure risks.

Small Mammals & Backyard Chickens

Our veterinarians are proud to extend compassionate veterinary care to your pocket pets and backyard chickens. We understand that these unique companions have specialized needs and require an individualized approach to their health and well-being.

We offer preventive wellness care, illness and sick-pet visits, consultations, diagnostics, and surgical services for a variety of non-traditional pets.

Whether you’re looking to establish a wellness plan, have concerns about a change in your pet’s health, or need diagnostic or surgical care, our team is here to help keep your unique companion healthy and thriving.

Diagnostics

When your pet isn’t feeling their best, timely and accurate diagnostics can make all the difference. At Champlain Veterinary Clinic, we utilize modern diagnostic technology and in-house laboratory equipment to help our veterinarians quickly evaluate your pet and make informed decisions about their care.

Our hospital is equipped with an in-house laboratory, digital radiography (X-rays), and modern diagnostic capabilities, allowing us to perform many tests right here in our clinic and receive results quickly. This can help minimize delays in diagnosis and treatment while reducing the need for unnecessary trips to outside facilities.

From routine wellness screening to investigating complex medical concerns, our diagnostic services help our veterinarians get a clearer picture of your pet’s health and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Combined with our modern surgical and dental suites, our facility allows us to provide comprehensive care—from diagnosis through treatment—in a comfortable, familiar environment for your pet.

Surgical Services

At Champlain Veterinary Clinic, we provide surgical care for dogs, cats, small mammals, and pocket pets. Our experienced veterinary team takes a thoughtful, individualized approach to every procedure, with your pet’s safety and comfort as our priority.

Our modern surgical suite allows us to perform a wide range of procedures, including spay and neuter surgeries, soft tissue procedures, orthopedic surgeries, and dental cleanings with extractions.

Before surgery, our veterinarians will discuss the recommended procedure, answer your questions, and develop an appropriate anesthetic and pain-management plan for your pet. Throughout the procedure and recovery period, our team closely monitors your pet to help ensure they remain comfortable and supported.

From routine procedures to more complex surgical needs, we are committed to providing high-quality surgical care in a familiar, compassionate environment.

Spay & Neuter

Spaying and neutering are important components of preventive veterinary care and can provide significant health and behavioral benefits. The ideal age to spay or neuter can vary depending on your pet’s species, breed, size, sex, lifestyle, and individual health considerations. Our veterinarians can help you determine the appropriate timing for your pet.

Potential benefits of spaying and neutering include:

Prevention of pyometra: Spaying eliminates the risk of pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that requires urgent treatment.
Reduced risk of mammary tumors: Spaying before the first heat cycle provides the greatest reduction in the risk of mammary tumors. Your veterinarian can discuss how the timing of spaying may affect your pet’s individual risk.
Prevention of testicular disease: Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and can reduce the risk of certain prostate conditions.
Reduced reproductive behaviors: Spaying and neutering can help decrease behaviors associated with reproduction, including roaming, urine marking, and certain mating-related behaviors.
Reduced risk associated with roaming and fighting: Altering your pet may decrease the tendency to roam or engage in fights, which can reduce the risk of injuries such as bite wounds, abscesses, and lacerations, as well as exposure to certain infectious diseases.

Because there is no single recommendation that is right for every pet, we take an individualized approach to spay and neuter timing. Our veterinarians will discuss the potential benefits and considerations with you and help determine what is appropriate for your pet.
